Initially a simple chapel, the Barst church was built in 1731. A chapel dedicated to Saint Wendelin was mentioned for the first time in the 1821th century. In XNUMX, Barst became an autonomous parish and the Saint-Wendelin chapel became a church. According to legend Wendelin met a great lord. This extremely rich and godless man admonished Wendelin for begging for food. The nobleman said to him: “You are a young man. You can earn your own food. Come take care of my flock and earn your bread. » Wendelin felt that by taking this job and being paid for it, he would learn even more about the world. He agreed and got to work caring for a herd of pigs. These creatures did not give him a minute of rest and more time for his prayers. He asked his master to relieve him of this task. The master, despite all his faults, respected Wendelin's wishes. He made him work as a herdsman to take care of a herd of cows. Wendelin was then able to devote more time to his devotions. The story goes that God blessed this flock because of Wendelin's prayers, so that they became so productive that again Wendelin found himself with little time for prayer. The herd grew twice as fast as the noble lord's other herds. Once again, Wendelin begged her master to help her. The latter then entrusted him with a flock of sheep. Once again Wendelin found himself with ample time for prayer. He did not always take his sheep to the same pastures, and often he drove them very far. Furthermore, he wanted to be away from any other shepherds so that he could concentrate on his prayers. This is how legend has it that Saint Wendelin set foot on the lands of Barst. Wendelin was buried in the church of Sankt-Wendel in Saarland. Protector of animals, and following his visit to the lands of Barst, the inhabitants entrusted him with their church.
