Mining in the coal basin stopped in 2004, with the last extractions at the Houve pit in Creutzwald. The headframes are today the last visual witnesses of this period of exploitation in the coal basin. "The headframes are metal porticos which are located above the shafts. They support an enormous pulley which drives the cage suspended from a cable..." which transported the men and the material "to the bottom" and brought the coal up "towards the bottom". the day". “Their characteristic silhouettes remain the unwavering symbol of mining imagery.” Ext. Passion Coal_Ed. Serpenoise. Dug in 1930, the wells at the Cuvelette headquarters remained in operation until 1972. After closure, they were maintained to be used for ventilation of the Merlebach construction sites. The Cuvelette south well, on the right, is the last concrete headframe in the coal basin and is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. The one in Cuvelette Nord, made of metal, owes its preservation to the installation of telephone antennas.
